You are required to complete TWO assessments- Assessment 1 (Project) & Assessment 2 (Skills Review) TEST. You must successfully complete both assessments to be deemed competent in this course.

As part of Assessment 1(Project), you are required to design and implement a fully-functional customised database for a real client from scratch (or from intermediate stage) , in consultation with key stakeholders, such as your teacher and the client.

The Assessment (Project) requires you to design, build and validate a Database application to process transactions and store the required data for the client. You are also required to ensure information and communications technology (ICT) services meet current and future internal operational requirements of your client.

This assessment consists of three stages: Stage 1 & 3 is team submission and Stage 2 is an individual submission. Work for each stage of the project (outlined below) should be submitted on the due date, as per the Teaching Schedule.

Assessment 2 (Skills Review) – Open book, conducted in Week 15 during class time.

To be deemed competent in this task you will be expected to demonstrate your knowledge of the skills and concepts covered in all sections of the course.

Assessment (Project ) Stage 1 (Team):   Due: Week 5 – Sunday Midnight

During this stage you are required to analyse and understand the current and future requirements (including ICT infrastructure) for implementing a database to record all data necessary for a smooth functioning of the client

  • Analyse business and other data to identify area of business operations (as an example payments made by customers / students) and boundaries of the system.
  • Analyse and submit each of these documents – a form used for capturing data, invoice issued to a purchaser, a weekly report generated by “client” and one query used to extract data.
  • Based on the above analysis, develop business rules and identify possible entities.
  • Analyse ICT infrastructure and identify possible ICT gaps based on the strategic plan of the “client”. Also document the effect of ICT developments. Please use the template provided to complete some aspects of this section.

Assessment (Project) Stage 2 (Individual):  Due: Week 10 Sunday Midnight

 In continuation of stage 1, in this stage you need to design and build a prototype database for “the client”.  You also need to determine and evaluate the result of proposed ICT changes.

  • Identify (or refine) business rules and assumptions from stage 1.
  • Draw ERD using VISIO tool with appropriate template.
  • Build prototype (with appropriate data types, PK and FK) with sample data in MS Access.
  • Write program / s to populate tables up to 50000 records in a table.
  • Determine and evaluate the effect of ICT changes.

Assessment (Project) Stage 3 (Team): Due: Week 14 Sunday Midnight

Stage 3 of the project requires you to build and validate prototype and apply normalisation principles while managing changes requested by the client.

  • Re-examine ERD within the team and optimise it.
  • Modify and update ERD if client suggests changes to specifications.
  • Apply normalisation principles to refine the model.
  • Build prototype in MS Access with forms and reports as required by the client.
  • Build and validate the model in MS SQL Server.
  • Document the entire model, including training requirements.
  • Develop action plans to implement proposed changes in ICT infrastructure.

Students will receive feedback or confirmation for each stage of submission. It is therefore vital that any design documentation and other work required for each stage be submitted in a timely manner.

In order to be deemed competent in this Assessment (Project) you will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of areas including (and not limited to) the following key areas:

  • Skills in gathering and analysing data to determine requirements
  • Ability to produce ERDs for a wide variety of scenarios
  • Ability to build and implement a database using established design.
  • Ability to normalise your tables to store data effectively
  • Ability to evaluate current ICT infrastructure and develop ICT services to meet future enterprise requirements.
    • Documentation of the complete model and training requirements.

    You will be asked to demonstrate understanding of the project submission.

    Late submissions of work required for any stage of this project will be eligible for grading at CAG (Competency Achieved) level only.  

    Assessment 1 (Project) Stage 1: 

    Context/Purpose

    For this task you will assume that your team is working in an IT organisation and reporting to Senior Manager of the organisation.  Your team has been deputed to capture your client’s database requirements including ICT infrastructure to meet their current and future business operations.

    Your team will be required to analyse the client requirements based on various business documents like invoice , payments and so on (these are given by the client only if your team requests them) and also by raising appropriate questions. If these documents are not made available y your client, then your team needs to design and analyse them.

    Your team will then present the findings of your analysis to your senior manager for approval and feedback.

    What you need to do:

    Student will develop skills in

     

    • Business analysis including reviewing documents like data structures, reports, user interface.
    • Understanding client business operations.
    • Identifying boundaries of the proposed system.
    • Identifying possible entities for the proposed system.
    • Evaluating current business strategy of the client.
    • Communication to liaise with stakeholders.

    In this stage your team must analyse and develop an understanding of the current and future requirements (including ICT infrastructure) of the “client”. Your goal will be to implement a database to record all data necessary for the smooth functioning of “client’s business”.

    1. Analyse business and other data to identify area of business operations (for example payments made by students……) and boundaries of the system.
      1. Outline any business processes / operations which generate data for the database.
        • List the process and write a short paragraph explaining what the process involves
      2. State the boundaries of the system:
        • Draw context diagram which clearly defines what is included in the system.
        • List some business processes which will NOT be included in the system, or processes which do not even generate data (for the database).
          1. Analyse & Submit each of the following documents:
            1. A form for capturing data eg. an enrolment form
            2. An invoice issued to a purchaser.
            3. A weekly report generated by the “client” eg. payment data
            4. A (very useful) query which is executed to extract important data required by the management of “the client”

          This analysis (refer to “weekly solution” under module on canvas) will be useful for capturing fields for data to be recorded in the proposed database.  Your team can also suggest improvements, such as the fields to be included or not included, and the general format of the document (a form or bill).

          Where a document does not exist currently, you will need to produce your own prototype eg. using mockupscreens.com trial software or any other software.

          1. Based on your team analysis in (1) & (2) & answers received (from client) for questions raised if any, develop business rules and identify possible entities.
            1. List the entities which will be required, based on your above analysis (1) & (2).
            2. List the difference between your list of entities to the sample DB structure provided.
            3. Give your reasoning for the difference.
            4. List any business rules related to these entities.
              • These business rules should indicate relationships between these entities, and of course include cardinalities.
            5. Analyse ICT infrastructure and identify ICT gaps based on the strategic plan of “the client”, and also document the effect of ICT developments. Also maintain logbook and record details of work completed.
              1. Create and analyse a strategic plan for the business based on information you have received:
                1. Use the template for a strategic plan you were given. It includes the mission, values and goals of the organisation, as well as SWOT analysis.  Address all points in the plan
                2. Analyse the strategic plan from two different perspectives (a) the role of the manager of the “the client” (b) the role of a business (ICT) consultant (Yourself / your team) to “the clientl”.
          • Integrate the points from the above two perspectives into one to create one strategic plan for the “client”.
          1. Each student in the group should write one statement or goal. Then all statements should be merged to produce one precise statement, or a series of statements.
          1. Identify ICT gaps, based on the strategic plan of the organisation. Areas for analysis are included in the template mentioned above.
          2. Document the effect of ICT developments (software & hardware) & report to the appropriate person.
            1. Research trends in software and hardware in ICT industry.
            2. Optimise and suggest appropriate hardware, software & cost required to meet your client’s current and future needs.
