Guidance: Provide a brief abstract of your project this should concisely summarise the purpose of your project covering:
• In-discipline challenge and research question
• the justification, relevance and importance of the work (e.g. why you are going to do your project)
• Practical element and expected outcome
• Main results / findings you expect to get from your practical work and how this will help you answer your research question
1 Project Overview
1.1 Aim (<50 words) Guidance: Clearly state the overall aim of your project – this should be overarching and should incorporate both research and the practical element. 1.2 Objectives (<250 words) Your objectives should be SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound. The objectives should be provided as SMART objectives identifying what you intend to achieve and the related major activities, deliverables and outcomes. Typically a project has between five and eight objectives. Ensure that your aims can be met and that your research question can be answered by your objectives and that they result in your expected outcomes. 2 Research Approach 2.1 Research Question (<50 words) Guidance: Your research question must be a question. The underpinning research should relate to how you will answer this question. Your research question is answered through your proposed literature focus, practical work and exploration. 2.2 Research Focus (3 Citations and <150 words) Guidance: Identify the 3 most interesting and relevant research articles that you have read so far for your project, providing the citations and a brief explanation of under 50 words on each explaining why it is interesting for your work. 2.3 Research Design (<100 words) Guidance: Outline the approach, methods and tecnhiques you will use for your research and to enable you to answer your research question. This should include relevant citations to the various methods, approaches and techniques selected or artciles about their use. 2.4 Research Ethics (Yes/No) Guidance: If you are involving human participants such as for user studies, collecting personal or sensitive data you will need University of Sunderland ethical approval for your project. Obtaining ethical approval is typically rapid and straightforward and will be undertaken after you have been allocated a supervisor. Does your project require ethics approval? For example, does it involve human participants and/or personal or sensitive data? (delete as appropriate) YES / NO 3 Practical Element 3.1 Sponsor / Client Details Guidance: Your project practical outcomes have a client or sponsor. Add their details here. Include weblinks if relevant Client / Sponsor Project Requirements & Outcomes Guidance: Bullet point list of the specific requirements the client / sponsor has for the project product / output and the process of developing it, including any interim deliverables 3.2 Expected Outcomes (< 150 words) Guidance: Bulleted list of expected practical outcomes – no more than 5. Do not include assignments in this list, it should be the practical outcomes from your project. 3.3 Practical Approach (<150 words) Outline your approach to developing your practical element, identifying methods, tools, techniques and approach you will use to enable you to achieve your practical element. 3.4 Resources & Risk (<100 words) Guidance: If your client / sponsor is providing access to resources specify this here. Briefly identify any risks to project completion and how you will aim to mitigate these. 4 Professional Development 4.1 Relevance (<100 words) Guidance: identify the specialist area of your project and detail how this relates to your MSc programme, outlining the skills and knowledge required for the project and how the project will enable you to extend and improve these. 4.2 Motivation (<100 words) Guidance: Briefly detail your motivation for undertaking this project. 5 Supervisor Guidance: If you have already identified your supervisor and they have agreed to supervise you, add their name here. For many students you will not not yet have identified your supervisor, so leave this section blank. 6 References Guidance: In Harvard Style 7 Appendix 7.1 Letter/Email of support from Client / Sponsor Guidance: short letter from your sponsor / client Letter of Support Guidance: To support the client/sponsor table you should also have an email or Letter of Support from your client or sponsor as an appendix. This example highlights the very short (but sufficient) content your client/sponsor needs to provide. If your client / sponsor is also providing access to resources, such as hardware, software, datasets or access to user groups, this should also be confirmed in the letter of support: Subject: Letter of Support for John Smith – Adding Affective Functionality for Adaptivity I am happy to provide my support for John Smith’s project on developing affective data recognition.
