Appendix 1 – Role play scenarios

Role play scenario 1: ACID REFLUX
Profile Description
Doctor
A Chinese patient comes to see you complaining heartburn and acid indigestion. You ask what they did to deal with the problem. Find out how often this happens. If it is consistently more than 2 times a week, it could be GERD (Gastroephageal Reflux Disease). This is a problem in the esophagus where it doesn’t close properly and stomach acids come back up and can lead to bleeding and ulcers, can make swallowing difficult, and can lead to esophogeal cancer. As the cause of his problem is a kind of complicated, you asked him to come for a M.R.I test.
Treatment:
• Use antacids
• Stop smoking
• Lose weight
• Eat small frequent meals
• Don’t lie down until 3 hours after meals
If the condition continues, will refer to a specialist to consider surgery as an option.
Patient You go to see your doctor because you have been having terrible heartburn after eating. You used to get it once in a while, especially if you ate spicy foods, but in the last month it has been happening at least 3 times a week. You have been using Tums but now they don’t seem to be helping. You are frustrated that you can’t enjoy eating and worried about what is wrong with you. After diagnosis, the doctor found your situation is more complicated so he scheduled an appointment for Tuesday at 11:00am for a M. R.I. test but you cannot make it because you have to attend an opening at a school with your son that day.
Interpreter A Chinese patient is going to his/her doctor to talk about problems with heartburn, which is happening more and more often. The patient seems in a lot of pain, and you are very sorry for her/him.

Role play scenario 2: CAR ACCIDENT
Profile Description
Solicitor You are seeing an enquiry. The client was in a car accident. The accident happened on Friday 26/02/2016. He/she had just finished his/her work of the day and was heading back home. He/she was driving at approximately 20km/h toward the intersection of Concord Road and Parramatta Road, Strathfield while vehicle with registration number BAF64A, who s/he understood was stationary in a long queue of traffic in a left turn only lane, suddenly veered out into his/her lane. The impact caused his/her car to roll three times.
Did Police attend the accident scene?
Did an ambulance come and take him/her to any hospital?
What injuries did he/she incur from the accident and what treatments he/she has been receiving?
Tell him/her that you will request a detailed report from the police and lodge a claim form to the CTP insurance of the vehicle which hit him/her.
Tell him/her that you will write to her in detail about the whole process of CTP claim.
Client You are seeing a compensation solicitor because you were in a car accident two weeks ago. You were turning left when an oncoming car struck you and your airbag deployed. You were driving at approximately 20km/h toward the intersection of Concord Road and Parramatta Road, Strathfield when vehicle with registration number BAF64A, who you understand was stationary in a long queue of traffic in a left turn only lane, quickly turned out of that lane and merged into your path. The impact caused your vehicle to roll three times.

You lost consciousness at the time of impact for a short period of time. An ambulance attended and conveyed you to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where you were admitted overnight for observation.

As a result of the accident, you suffered a potential brain injury and are suffering significant effects in the form of headaches, vomiting and dizziness. You also suffered soft tissue injury to your abdomen/chest region and are experiencing psychological problems.
Interpreter A Chinese client was injured in a car accident two weeks ago. He/she is suffering a potential brain injury and other significant effects as a result of this accident. He/she wants to know whether h/she has any entitlement under Motor Vehicle Accident Act. And if yes, how long the whole process will be?
